MANILA, Philippines — The San Juan government has prohibited karaoke sessions and other activities that create loud noise during school hours.

Under Ordinance 78 signed by Mayor Francis Zamora, the use of karaoke machines and other amplified audio and video devices as well as engaging in noisy activities, playing loud music in jeepneys and private cars are banned from Monday to Saturday.

Under the measure, residents are allowed to use karaoke machines only from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Sundays, the local government permits karaoke and videoke sessions from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Violators will be fined P3,000 up to P5,000 or penalized with three months in prison, depending on the offense count.

“Students are already having a hard time adjusting to their online classes. Noise from loud music will make it more difficult for them,” Zamora said.

“We ask our constituents to cooperate and help out students in whatever way they can. This is another way of making sure that those studying at home will have a conducive learning environment,” he added.
