COVID-19 cases in PNP surge anew

MANILA, Philippines — The number of coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 cases in the Philippine National Police (PNP) has increased again.

In a report on Thursday, the PNP said 119 more police officers tested positive for the virus, bringing the total to 5,650.

Only 36 cases were recorded in the PNP on Wednesday.

At least 1,226 patients remain in hospitals and quarantine facilities.

At least 48 of the new cases are from various administrative and operational units of the PNP.

Forty-five are assigned in Metro Manila, 10 in Caraga, five in Calabarzon, two each in Bicol, Zamboanga peninsula, Mimaropa and the Cordilleras and one each in Central Luzon and Western Visayas.

In Bacolod City, 22 inmates and nine jail guards at the Metro Bacolod district jail contracted the virus following the death of two infected inmates.

Bacolod Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, chairman of the city inter-agency task force on COVID-19, said the patients would be transferred to a facility in Talisay City.
