MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has recorded 2,423 murder cases or an average of 13 a day during the community quarantine.

Records show that the killings were documented from March 17 to Sept. 10, when the government imposed lockdowns to prevent the coronavirus disease 2019 from spreading.

The PNP did not give details on the regions with the most number of cases.

The daily average is higher compared to 10 killings per day in June. It is also lower by 21.38 percent compared to the 3,086 cases documented from Sept. 21, 2019 to March 16.

Aside from murder, 586 homicide cases or about three deaths a day were recorded during the same period.

The number of homicide cases is lower by 26.56 percent compared to 798 incidents that occured before the lockdown.

Among those killed during the quarantine were peace consultant Randall Echanis, who was stabbed to death in Quezon City, and human rights advocate Zara Alvarez, who was gunned down in Bacolod City.

Both incidents occurred last month.
