Go: Balik Probinsya should be voluntary

Paolo Romero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The “Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa” program, which encourages people and businesses in Metro Manila to relocate to the provinces, should be implemented on a voluntary basis, Sen. Bong Go said yesterday.

Go, who proposed the program that led to President Duterte’s issuance of Executive Order 114 to implement it, said no one is to be compelled to return to his home province.

“People cannot be forced to go back to their provinces. This program was prepared for those who want to go home or relocate to the provinces in which the government will provide them with good opportunities to start a confortable life in provinces after the COVID-19 crisis,” he said.

Go added that the program is timely “because many want to go home now. Those who want to remain in Metro Manila, let’s respect them. Those who want to go home should be prioritized.”

The program aims to encourage people and businesses in the National Capital Region to relocate to the provinces to promote the equitable distribution of opportunities and economic development throughout the country, he said.

He said all concerned agencies will align their programs, activities and projects to encourage and help those wanting to return to the provinces.

He said local government units are also asked to prepare to help those returning to their jurisdictions to gain livelihood and housing.
