MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte is asking the city council to extend the deadline for payment of taxes from Jan. 20 to Feb. 2.

Belmonte said on Saturday she would ask the city council to approve a proposed ordinance that will extend the deadline.

“The business community has requested for additional period of time to allow them to settle their tax obligations,”Belmonte said. “In Quezon City, we are open to suggestions and appeal. If they are reasonable, then we would accede to these requests.”

As of Jan. 15, the city government said income from business permits and real property taxes increased 16 and 29 percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

Belmonte said the tax collection would have been higher if work on Jan. 13 had not been suspended due to ashfall from the eruption of Taal Volcano.
