3 La Union water execs get 10 years for graft
MANILA, Philippines — The Sandiganbayan has sentenced three water district officials in La Union to 10 years in prison for stealing over P7.2 million in public funds.
Aside from prison terms, the anti-graft court disqualified Metro La Union Water District general manager Felipe Picazo, division manager Virginia Laroco and cashier Evangelina Flores from holding public office.
The respondents were ordered to pay damages equivalent to the amount they stole
Record showed they issued checks representing the allowances of the employees without vouchers and supporting documents.
The respondents reportedly ignored the notice of disallowance issued by the Commission on Audit.
In a decision dated Nov. 29, the anti-graft court said the Office of the Ombudsman was able to prove that the respondents violated Republic Act 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
The court said the respondents’ action caused undue damage to the government.
