Fires leave 72 families homeless

MANILA, Philippines — Two fires broke out in Makati and Valenzuela since Monday night, rendering 72 families homeless.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) reported that a fire started at the home of Laarni Villalva and spread to 26 houses at the corner of J.P. Rizal and Varona streets in Barangay Tejeros at past 7 a.m. yesterday.

The fire, which reached fourth alarm in less than 30 minutes, destroyed P1.2 million worth of property before it was put out at around 10 a.m.

Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire. No casualty was reported in the incident.

The cause is yet to be determined, fire probers said.

Mayor Abigail Binay said in a statement she ordered the city’s social welfare office and disaster risk reduction and management office to assist the families, who are staying at the barangay’s covered court.

The agencies set up tents and mobile showers as well as distributed food and other supplies.

Sen. Christopher Go distributed relief goods when he visited the Makati fire victims yesterday.

In Valenzuela, a fire of still undetermined origin destroyed five car parts stores in Barangay Marulas on Monday night.

No one was injured in the fire, which started in one of the stores at around 4 p.m. and was put out six hours later.
