Centralized bus dispatch system pushed
MANILA, Philippines — Marikina City Rep. Bayani Fernando yesterday pushed for a centralized bus dispatching system to ease traffic congestion along EDSA and other major roads in Metro Manila.
Fernando said he started the scheme when he was Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman during the Arroyo administration, but it was discontinued by his successors.
“Four months, five months ago, I urged the MMDA to try this, but they are doing nothing,” he lamented.
He said a centralized bus dispatching scheme would result in less traffic congestion.
“There are more than 4,000 buses in Metro Manila owned by at least 100 companies. You have to pool everything and let the MMDA dispatch them as needed,” Fernando said.
He said at least seven bus terminals could be established in the fringes of Metro Manila.
Fernando said he has been hearing of plans by the MMDA and Department of Transportation for a centralized bus dispatch system, but the scheme has not even been tried.
The House committee on transportation has also endorsed the “carousel-like” traffic scheme.
