542 foreigners held for investment scam
More than 500 foreigners were arrested for their alleged involvement in an investment scam in Parañaque City Wednesday night.
The raid on the office of Golden Unicorn Technology Inc. at the Millennium Building was staged by the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), Bureau of Immigration (BI), Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Chinese police.
BI Commissioner Jaime Morente reported that a total of 542 foreigners – 442 Chinese, 45 Myanmar nationals, 25 Malaysians, 23 Vietnamese, four Taiwanese and three Indonesians – were apprehended.
NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said Philippine authorities, through China, received information that the business process outsourcing firm, which had been operating illegally, was reportedly involved in telecommunications fraud.
“They get their information by phishing through fraudulent means, and eventually, they use it to pursue their criminal activity,” Eleazar said on how the foreigners choose their victims.
BI intelligence chief Fortunato Manahan Jr. said the victims are mostly from mainland China.
Eleazar added that the foreigners will face charges of working without a permit. They were placed under the custody of the NCRPO’s Regional Special Operations Unit. –
