Cops arrest ex-Camiguin mayor convicted of graft

MANILA, Philippines — The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested on Wednesday a former mayor of Mahinog town in Camiguin, who was convicted of graft by the Sandiganbayan last year.

Alex Jajalla, 62, was collared by personnel of the CIDG’s Northern Mindanao field office in Barangay Hubangon at around 6 p.m.

Brig. Gen.Bernabe Balba, CIDG officer-in-charge, said the anti-graft court convicted Jajalla in a ruling issued on Sept. 9.

The former mayor was sentenced to six years in prison when he approved the six-month leave with pay of his brother, who was his security aide, after he was injured in an accident even though it was not work-related.

Jajalla was brought to the Mahinog police station for documentation.

The CIDG said Jajalla’s arrest is a manifestation of the government’s resolve to hold accountable corrupt government officials. - Gerry Lee Gorit
