Makati eyes P1.7-billion target for delinquent property auction

MANILA, Philippines — The city government of Makati is poised to raise P1.7 billion from the auction of properties whose owners remained delinquent despite several notices.

In a statement issued yesterday, city treasurer Jesusa Cuneta said the properties will be sent to auction if the real property taxes are still unpaid by November.

“The auction is expected to generate a substantial amount of revenue that will put the city way above its target for real property tax, as well as the total target for the year,” she said.

Cuneta, however, said the city continues to notify concerned owners of the impending public auction through mail and public announcements in newspapers.

By the start of August, Makati attained 83 percent of its revenue target of P17.1 billion for the year, with its total collections reaching P14.2 billion.

Of the total amount, P4.8 billion came from real property tax, which surpassed the target of P4.7 billion.

Based on the records of the assessment department and the city treasurer’s office, the village with the most delinquent properties is Pio del Pilar with 166; followed by Bel-Air with 151; Poblacion, 137; Rizal, 96; Guadalupe Nuevo, 94; La Paz, 92; San Isidro, 90; San Lorenzo, 88; Tejeros, 87; Palanan, 85, and Cembo, 82.

They are followed by East Rembo with 56; Guadalupe Viejo, 51; Comembo and Pitogo, 49 each; Olympia, 28; Sta. Cruz, 23; Pembo, 22; Bangkal, Kasilawan, South Cembo and Singkamas, 21 each; Valenzuela and Pinagkaisahan, 20 each; Dasmarinas, Magallanes and Urdaneta, 19; West Rembo and San Antonio with 18 and Carmona with eight.
