Rains affect voter registration in Pangasinan

DAGUPAN CITY, Philippines — Heavy downpours have affected the conduct of voter registration in Pangasinan, according to the provincial election supervisor in this city.

Marino Salas told The STAR on Saturday that since the two-month registration resumed on Aug. 1, only 2,578 have so far registered in the province’s 44 towns and four cities.

“It’s low but good enough,” Salas said, adding they will promote the voter registration in malls and schools to achieve higher turnout.

He said they are targeting registrants for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections as well as adult or regular voters, transferees and reactivation of registration.

“The registration will run until Sept. 30,  including holidays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” Salas added.

Registrants for the SK polls must be 15 years old, while regular voters must be 18 on or before the May 11, 2020 elections.

Those who have previously registered for the SK polls need not register again to become regular voters.

Salas said the Commission on Elections’ registration system automatically captures voters’ data for inclusion in the list of regular voters.

First-time voters must bring a copy of their birth or baptismal certificates or any valid government-issued identification card.

Pangasinan had 1.9 million registered voters during the May 13 elections.
