Makati shutters clinic over liposuction death

MANILA, Philippines — The Makati City government yesterday closed down a beauty clinic in connection with the death of a businesswoman who underwent liposuction.

Michael Camiña, city legal officer and spokesman, said Mayor Abby Binay ordered the closure of the Contours Advanced Face and Body Sculpting Institute and the city’s health department to conduct an investigation.

He said the city government wants to find out how the incident happened and sought assistance from the Department of Health to avoid similar incidents in the future.

“The safety of the general public is a priority of Mayor Abby. We will not condone unsafe practices and will act immediately to protect the public,” Camiña said.

Nory Bobadilla, 43, a mother of five, died last Saturday, a few days after she slipped into a coma while undergoing liposuction.

City police chief Maj. Gideon Ines Jr. said they have filed charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against doctor Claudine Roura and anesthesiologist Katrina Bulseco.
