2 Chinese held for robbery, extortion
MANILA, Philippines — Two Chinese men were apprehended by operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) for allegedly extorting money from their fellow Chinese in Makati on Monday night.
They were Yang Xianghai and Li Wu Chen.
CIDG director Maj. Gen. Amador Corpus said Yang was nabbed in an entrapment operation at a mall in Barangay Poblacion at around 6:30 p.m.
Li was collared in a follow-up operation along Seaside Boulevard in Pasay City.
Police said Chen Yu Kang complained that the suspects extorted P150,000 from him.
The suspects allegedly lured the victim to put P1 million in an investment business sometime in January.
Probers said when Chen discovered that the investment was a scam, the suspects threatened him.
On May 3, the victim said the suspects demanded money in exchange for his safety, which prompted him to seek police help.
The suspects are being held on charges of robbery and extortion at the CIDG headquarters at Camp Crame in Quezon City.
