Tobacco bricks, gadgets destroyed in Manila jail search
MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) destroyed hundreds of tobacco bricks, cell phones and other contraband discovered in the cells of inmates at the Manila City Jail (MCJ) yesterday.
Jail personnel, using a steamroller, baseball bats and their feet, destroyed over 307 cell phones and smart watches, 489 bricks of tobacco and thousands of cigarettes that visitors managed to smuggle to detainees over the past year, said BJMP spokesman Capt. Jayrex Bustinera.
The activity was in line with MCJ Resolution 012015, which seeks to stop the flood of contraband in the jail, he added.
Bustinera said a jail employee was recently dismissed after sneaking a pack of cigarettes into the facility.
A female visitor was caught with tobacco in a condom she hid in her vagina.
Bustinera said a cigarette costs P60 to P80 each in the MCJ and some enterprising detainees have made a business out of smuggling cigarettes into the jail.
He said the detainees are regularly tested for drugs and undergo rehabilitation if they fail the test.
