Rebels, soldiers clash in Negros; hundreds flee homes

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — More than 200 people evacuated their homes in Barangay Mabini, Escalante City, Negros Occidental amid gunfights between Army soldiers and New People’s Army rebels on Thursday.
Brig. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said city government officials and personnel of the 79th Infantry Battalion are providing assistance to the evacuees.
There was no reported casualty on the side of government troopers.
