MANILA, Philippines — Travelers coming from countries affected by African swine fever will undergo tighter scrutiny upon arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the Bureau of Customs said yesterday.
The Department of Agriculture listed these countries as Latvia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and China.
Aside from stepping through a foot bath designed to kill the virus, travelers’ hand-carried luggage will be x-rayed in order to check if they contain pork products, officials said.
Parcels arriving at warehouses will also be inspected.
Contaminated dumplings and hotdogs were recorded in Korea and Japan in 2018.
The Bureau of Animal Industry said the virus can destroy the P2-billion swine industry in the country.
