Negros Oriental cop chief relieved over slay of deputy
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — The police chief of Guilhungan, Negros Oriental was relieved from his post following the killing of his deputy by suspected communist rebels on Wednesday.
Superintendent Mario Baquiran was replaced by Superintendent Cristopher Navida, Senior Superintendent Raul Tacaca, Negros Oriental police director, said yesterday.
Senior Inspector Porferio Gabuya Jr. was shot several times while having coffee at a commercial establishment near the Guilhungan police station.
Juanito Magbanua, spokesman for the New People’s Army in Negros, denied that they were involved in the killing of Gabuya, saying the police officer had no record with the NPA.
“We are not responsible for his death,” Magbanua said over MBC Aksyon Radyo.
He gave assurance that the NPA would abide by the ceasefire it declared from Dec. 24 to Dec. 26 and Dec. 31 to Jan. 1.
Soldiers overrun NPA camp
In Nueva Ecija on Tuesday, soldiers overran a rebel camp in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija, where communist rebels were supposed to hold their 50th anniversary celebration on March 26 next year, the military said.
Personnel of the 91st Infantry Battalion said six plastic containers filled with rice were among the items recovered at the scene.
Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Salamat, Northern Luzon Command chief, commended the soldiers for their ”efficient response” to combat terrorism in Northern and Central Luzon. – With Artemio Dumlao
