21 hurt in bus crash

MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-one persons were injured when a commuter bus figured in an accident in Quezon City on Friday.

Chief Inspector Roldante Sarmiento, commander of  Traffic Sector 5, said the Precious Grace Transport bus was traversing the northbound lane of Commonwealth Avenue in Barangay San Vicente when the accident occurred at around 10:55 p.m.

In a report, Sarmiento said the mishap happened when bus driver Joel Castillon, 49, lost control of the steering wheel. He claimed the brakes malfunctioned.

The bus swerved to the right side and slammed into a steel post at a loading bay.

Twenty-one people, consisting of 12 males and eight females – sustained injuries. Among those hurt is bus conductor Jeffrey Simbulan.

Rescuers brought the victims to  East Avenue Medical Center and Quezon City General Hospital. Meanwhile, Castillon surrendered to police after the incident.

Probers are readying charges against Castillon for reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries and damage to property.

Representatives of the bus firm promised to shoulder the victims’ medical expenses.
