‘Good turnout on first day of voter registration’

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) reported yesterday a good turnout of registrants for the 2019 mid-term polls.

The first day of voter registration started on Monday and will run until Sept. 29.

James Jimenez, spokesman for the Comelec, said they received reports of long lines of registrants at the poll body’s local offices in Metro Manila.

“The good turnout shows that the Filipino people are eager to participate in next year’s elections. We hope it will be an upward trend,” Jimenez said.

The Comelec resumed the voter registration in order to enfranchise qualified voters nationwide.

The poll body is conducting satellite registration in the barangays, plazas and public schools for three months, Jimenez said.

He said preferential treatment would be given to the elderly, indigenous people, pregnant women and persons with disabilities during the registration.

The Comelec is expecting around two million voters in next year’s elections.
