Jathropa downs students in Cebu

MANILA, Philippines — At least 11 elementary students in Malabuyoc, Cebu were hospitalized yesterday after eating the fruits of jatropha locally known as tuba-tuba.

The students of Montañeza Elementary School, aged eight to 11, complained of stomach pain and vomiting. They were brought by their teacher to the MJ Cuenco Memorial Hospital.

Initial investigation showed the students ate tuba-tuba they picked from a tree around 50 meters away from the school during their lunch break.
