MANILA, Philippines — Aside from the financial assistance to be provided by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has released P12 million to residents and workers affected by the six-month closure of Boracay.

The DSWD said 5,244 residents and workers received various forms of assistance, including transportation allowance, cash-for-work and livelihood aid.

DSWD officer-in-charge Emmanuel Leyco said they are also preparing assistance to members of transport cooperatives.

“We continue to reach out to more coops and other informal sector workers, such as those who make and sell handicrafts, food vendors and those who tend small shops and stalls. We want to help them through the cash-for-work scheme,” Leyco said.

He said they would recommend a systematic and continuous provision of cash-for-work in coordination with other agencies.

The DOLE said it also alloted P6.5 million to implement emergency employment in government offices for 200 youths affected by the closure of Boracay. – Mayen Jaymalin
