LEGAZPI CITY, Philippines — Activities related to the observance of the Holy Week is prohibited within Mayon Volcano’s  six-kilometer permanent danger zone, the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (Apsemo) said yesterday.

Cedric Daep, Apsemo chief, said he would not allow the holding of any event in the area.

“We need to implement the no-human activity policy within the six-kilometer  permanent danger zone to avoid untoward incidents or accidents. Allowing these activities inside the danger zone when Mayon is still under Alert Level 3 is very dangerous,” Daep told The STAR.

He was referring to visits to the stations of the cross in  Barangay Mayon in Tabaco City and camping near the volcano.

“Mayon remains under a high level of unrest. If we allow them, we might be held liable if something goes wrong,” Daep said.

He also warned of rockfalls on the slopes of the volcano.

Tabaco City administrator Richard Colarina said they would request personnel of the Philippine National Police and Army to put up checkpoints in the entry points to the danger zone.
