MANILA, Philippines — Residents of Mindanao should make known their stand on the possibility of postponing the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections in May, a Commission on Elections (Comelec) official said yesterday.

“If you think that the elections in Mindanao should not be postponed, please come and tell the Comelec,” the poll body’s spokesman James Jimenez said.

Jimenez said public hearings provide an opportunity for the people to be heard.

The poll body will hold three public hearings on the postponement of the elections  in Mindanao following Congress’ approval of a joint resolution extending martial law from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2018.

The public hearings will be held on 700 Gov. Carmins Avenue and at the Grand Caprice Restaurant and Convention Center in Zamboanga City on Jan. 22,  in Cagayan de Oro City on Jan. 23 and at Alnor Hotel and Convention Center in Cotabato City on Jan. 29.

President Duterte signed Republic Act 10952 postponing the barangay and SK elections to the second Monday of May this year amid concerns that drug lords will fund candidates.
