10-hectare rice field damaged by oil spill
MANILA, Philippines — At least 10 hectares of rice fields were destroyed when oil leaked from a power plant in Calapan, Mindoro on Monday.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said around 800 liters of fuel oil being transferred from the main storage tank to a buffer tank owned by DMCI Power Corp. in Calapan also flowed to a nearby creek. The leak was contained yesterday.
Capt. Armand Balilo, PCG spokesman, said PCG-Marine Environment Protection Unit personnel were immediately deployed to Caluangan Lake.
Balilo said the PCG set up its shipboard oil pollution emergency plan equipment while DMCI personnel laid out absorbent pads and oil spill booms in the lake.
Initial investigation showed a faulty sensor caused the spill.
Damage to agriculture has yet to be determined.
