‘Moderately strong’ quakes jolt Leyte, Masbate

MANILA, Philippines - Earthquakes hit Masbate and Leyte yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismo-logy (Phivolcs). 

A magnitude 4.4 tremor struck seven kilometers southwest of Capoocan, Leyte at around 9:29 a.m. It was felt at Intensity 4 in Capoocan and Leyte towns, Intensity 3 in Kananga and Intensity 2 in Tabango. 

A quake with a magnitude of 3.3 hit Leyte, Leyte at around 1:52 p.m. It was felt at Intensity 2. 

A magnitude 4.1 quake hit Masbate at around 10:06 a.m.  The epicenter was traced 15 kilometers southeast of Masbate, Masbate.

The temblor was felt at Intensity 4 in Masbate City.

Phivolcs said it recorded the tremor at Intensity 5. 

Intensity 4 is “moderately strong” while Intensity 5 is strong under the Phivolcs earthquake intensity scale. 

Phivolcs said the quakes were not expected to generate aftershocks.
