Tomas Osmeña takes Cebu City mayoral seat

MANILA, Philippines — The Cebu City Board of Canvassers proclaimed Tomas Osmeña as mayor-elect of the city Tuesday, shortly after it completed the counting of returns from all clustered voting precincts.

Osmeña of the Liberal Party (LP) defeated incumbent Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) by 33,915 votes. He garnered a total of 266,566 votes.

Osmeña, who served as mayor of Cebu City from 1988 to 1995 and from 2001 to 2010, is the grandson of the late President Sergio Osmeña.

He made a comeback after he lost to Rama in the May 2013 polls.

Meanwhile, Rama's running mate Edgardo Labella won his reelection bid as vice mayor of Cebu City.

Rama, meanwhile, vowed to appeal the results, claiming that the votes credit to his rival were supposed to be his. — Kristine Daguno-Bersamina
