Campaign to preserve Davao turtle sanctuary launched

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A non-stock, non-profit organization has launched a campaign seeking to preserve a sanctuary for Hawksbill turtle in this city.

The eight-hectare sanctuary located along the shore of Barangay Punta Dumalag has been developed into a Cleanergy Park by the Aboitiz Foundation.

The village has been identified as a breeding ground for sea turtles as well as 66 other species of trees, birds and fishes.

The Aboitiz Foundation wants to raise funds for the protection and preservation of the critically endangered Hawksbill turtle in Punta Dumalag, considered to be one of the last few remaining natural habitats for the species.

The foundation recently launched the “#BetterWorld for the Pawikans” in order to promote public awareness on how one could help ensure the turtles’ survival amid climate change and environmental degradation.

The park protects the turtles while paving the way for a new model of urban-based habitat conservation and biodiversity management.

“We want to include more people in our advocacy for the pawikan. Building a “BetterWorld” for them is not just our responsibility but a gift to the next generation,” said Erramon Aboitiz, president and chief executive officer of the Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc.
