Bus rapid transit would solve metro traffic congestion, solon says

Valenzuela City Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian said that an integrated bus rapid transit system, in addition to the existing Light Rail Transit and Metro Rail Transit would solve the traffic problem in Metro Manila.

MANILA, Philippines - A lawmaker urged the Metro Manila Development Authority on Friday to implement an efficient mass transport system such as the proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

Valenzuela City Rep. Sherwin noted that the solution to Metro Manila's traffic congestion is to invest in mass transit.

“Band aid solutions cannot untangle the traffic jams in Metro Manila. A realistic and doable plan can help ease the problem," Gatchalian said.

According to a report, the integrated bus rapid transit system would use bus ways, station and terminals that are adapted for large-capacity buses.

Gatchalian added that a mix of the BRT in addition to the existing Light Rail Transit and Metro Rail Transit would solve the traffic problem in Metro Manila.

The lawmaker made the proposal in response to a recent survey from Numbeo showing that the Philippines ranked ninth among countries with worst situation in the world.

The Palace earlier stated that the government has long-term solutions for the traffic problem in the country such as traffic management and infrastructure programs.
