Binay asked to negotiate for cops’ release

Ben Serrano - The Philippine Star

BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – Suspected New People’s Army (NPA) guerrillas holding three police officers captive in Surigao del Norte want Vice President Jejomar Binay to lead the negotiation for the release of the hostages.

The NPA reportedly made the call on Saturday, saying Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas apparently failed to fulfill his promise to reopen the peace talks, which was allegedly one of the conditions for the release of four other police officers earlier snatched in the province.

Last week relatives and families of the three police officers pleaded with the government to start the negotiation for the release of their loved ones.

Two of the hostages, Police Officer 3 Democrito Polvorosa and PO1 Marichel Unclara Contemplo, both of the Alegria municipal police, were snatched on Nov. 16 in Barangay Pongtod.

Another captive, PO1 Jonrey Amper, was snatched on Nov. 12 in Malimono town.

The kidnappers are reportedly asking for the suspension of military operations in the area, said Alegria Mayor Dominador Esma Jr.

Esma said he informed the provincial crisis committee about the alleged request of the kidnappers. He said there has been no response so far.

Army Lt. Patrick Martinez, acting spokesperson for the 4th Infantry Division, said soldiers and police officers will continue to search for the captives.
