No. of people affected by 'Mario' breaches 1M mark

MANILA, Philippines - The number of persons affected by tropical storm "Mario" has breached the 1 million mark, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Monday.

In an update, the NDRRMC said that the storm has affected 258,976 families or 1.160 million individuals in 1,126 villages in 27 provinces in Regions 1, 2, 3, 4-A, 4-B, 5, 7, Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR), and the Metro Manila.

It said that of the affected population, over 30,000 families or almost 130,000 individuals stayed in 324 evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC also reported that a total of 11 people have been confirmed killed during the cyclone's onslaught while injured persons reached to 12. Two persons remain missing.

The NDRRMC said that "Mario" also damaged a total of 2,135 houses, 425 of which were totally destroyed, in Regions 1, 3, 4-A, 4-B and CAR.

It said that the government has dispatched P19.814 million worth of relief goods and medicines to the affected areas.
