Malolos water tower set for demolition

MALOLOS CITY , Philippines  â€“ After nearly a century, the water tower of the City of Malolos Water District (CMWD) will be demolished, officials said on Saturday.

The move was opposed by some sectors, who called for the tower’s preservation noting that it is a part of the city’s heritage.

Mayor Christian Natividad told The STAR that the 50-foot tower is leaning toward Maunlad Mall located beside the Malolos public market.

“Engineers have long recommended the demolition of the water tower as it poses danger to people’s lives,” said Natividad.

Bernie Buenaventura, a board member of CMWD, said the chipped part of the tower’s roof had been falling down.

Buenventura said the tower have outlived its use, noting that it was last used about 20 years ago.

“It is actually empty for about 20 years now because our engineers in the past expressed concern about its safety,” he said.

Buenaventura said the tower is at least 60 years old. Some historians said it was built in 1920s.
