Gov't vows full implementation of laws for war veterans

Jovan Cerda - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The government vowed to ensure full implementation of laws and programs aimed to provide benefits to war veterans, President Benigno Aquino III said on Tuesday in the 71st commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan.

Speaking before government officials, diplomats and war veterans, Aquino said the government is intent on fully implementing the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Law, which ensures that non-United States citizens who fought for the Philippines during World War II are paid up to $9,000 while US citizens are given up to $15,000. Aquino said a total of $224 million have been disbursed to almost 18,700 applications approved under the law.

Aquino added that the government also looks after the health of the veterans through 599 public hospitals accredited by the Veteran’s Memorial Medical Center.

Aquino cited the ongoing cooperation among the US and Japan in moving forward from the atrocities committed by the Japanese Imperial against more than 70,000 Filipino and US soldiers during the Fall of Bataan.
