Manila to phase out trikes, pedicabs
MANILA, Philippines — Gas-operated tricycles and pedicabs will be totally phased out in Manila soon, Mayor Joseph Estrada announced yesterday.
Estrada said the move was in line with the city government’s environment-friendly programs.
“Tricycles and pedicabs will be off the streets,” Estrada said.
He said these vehicles would be replaced by e-tricycles, which were distributed by the local government to operators and drivers last year.
Around 20,000 tricycles are plying the streets of Manila.
Estrada said drivers who would avail themselves of e-tricycles need to shell out a boundary of only P150 per day.
An e-trike is payable within two years, the mayor said.
Gas-run tricycles can only accommodate three passengers while an e-trike can transport up to six passengers.
