MMDA to deputize tanods as traffic aides

Robertzon Ramirez - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will deputize barangay tanods or watchmen as traffic aides to help ease traffic congestion in the metropolis, an official said yesterday.

MMDA officer-in-charge Tim Orbos said the barangay watchmen would undergo seminars on anti-littering, anti-jaywalking as well as clearing of road obstructions such as illegally parked vehicles, hawkers and illegal transport terminals.

They will be allowed to apprehend traffic violators after the training, Orbos said.

The village watchmen will enforce the MMDA’s anti-littering and tricycle ban along major thoroughfares in their jurisdiction.

Orbos said the barangay watchmen would help in keeping secondary and tertiary roads free from obstructions.

“They will be our active partners in our efforts to ease the traffic situation in Metro Manila,” he said.

Orbos will meet with 13 barangay officials in Quezon City along with the members of the city’s Department of Public Order and Safety on May 16 at the MMDA main office in Makati City.

Barangay watchmen from Veterans Village, Ramon Magsaysay, Batasan Hills, Commonwealth, Holy Spirit, Old Balara, Loyola Heights, E. Rodriguez, Immaculate Concepcion, San Martin de Porres, Socorro, Apolonio Samson and Balingasa are expected to attend the training.

All expenses during the training will be shouldered by the MMDA, according to Orbos.
