MMDA sticks to P6,000 fine for colorum buses

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will continue to implement an old memorandum circular that sets the fine for colorum and out-of-line buses at P6,000, an official said yesterday.

The MMDA had not been deputized by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and Land Transportation Franchising  and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to enforce a joint administrative order, which imposes higher fines for colorum vehicles and traffic violations.

The joint administrative order imposes steeper fines for colorum vehicles: P1 million for buses, P200,000 for trucks, P50,000 for jeepneys, P200,000 for vans, P120,000 for taxis, and P6,000 for tricycles for the first offense.

Emerson Carlos, MMDA assistant manager for operations, said traffic enforcers of the agency will stick to the 1997 memorandum circular, which sets the fine for colorum vehicles at only P6,000.

On Oct. 10, the LTFRB ordered a bus company to pay a fine of P1 million for its colorum operations.

“The enforcement of higher fines for colorum buses is the sole function of LTFRB,” Carlos said over dzBB.
