Caloocan cops kill BJMP worker

MANILA, Philippines - A Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) employee was killed in an alleged shootout with police officers in Caloocan City Sunday night.

Members of the Caloocan City Police Station 1 and Special Reaction Unit responded after receiving a call that Alfred Tan, 32, who is assigned at the Malabon BJMP, was firing his gun indiscriminately along Ruby street in Interville Subdivision at past 7 p.m., investigators said.

When the lawmen arrived, Tan reportedly shot at them and triggered a shootout. He died on the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators recovered 19 spent M-16 rifle shells, two .45 caliber bullets, a .45 caliber pistol and a Squires Bingham rifle at the scene.

They could not say why Tan was firing his gun but confirmed that there was indeed an exchange of gunfire.

There were reports that Tan’s lawyer refused to have his remains autopsied in Camp Crame and his family would like to request the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct their own probe.
