MMDA gets P1.6 B for pumping station rehab

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) said yesterday it turned over P1.59 billion to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for the rehabilitation of water pumping stations to mitigate perennial flooding in Metro Manila and surrounding areas.

In a statement, the DBM said 12 water pumping stations – which have been in operation for an average of 34 years – will be repaired and its components upgraded.

The funds were sourced from the Department of Public Works and Highway’s budget for its flood management master plan.

“Inefficient pumping stations only undermine our flood-control efforts, so that even light or moderate rain showers can cause flooding in greater parts of Metro Manila. By now, we’re all too familiar with the consequences of inadequate flood control systems, including traffic jams, health hazards, and damaged property,” DBM Secretary Florencio Abad said.

He said the government is “seriously investing in infrastructure upgrades for our flood-control strategy” and he is encouraging government agencies to execute anti-flood measures this summer.

Among the pumping stations that will undergo rehabilitation are those in Libertad, Quiapo, Tripa de Galina, Pandacan, Valencia, Binondo, Aviles, Paco, Makati, Sta. Clara, Balete and Arroceros.
