Fire hits PSHS building in QC

- Reinir Padua -

Classes were suspended at the Philippine Science High School campus on Agham Road, Quezon City after a fire broke out in one of its buildings before dawn yesterday that also destroyed test papers stored there.

The periodic examinations scheduled yesterday and Thursday were also postponed since some of the papers for the test were des-troyed, said Florie Aran, executive assistant to campus director Dr. Helen Caintic.

It was still not clear when the periodic examinations would be rescheduled, Aran said in an interview.

Aran, however, said classes were suspended only for yesterday.

She also said the admissions examinations scheduled on Nov. 15 would push through as the test papers for it were stored in another room.

Reports reaching the Quezon City Fire District stated the blaze broke out at the second floor of the Science Humanities Building at 1:14 a.m. yesterday.

The fire reportedly started from the ceiling of the faculty center. Apart from some of the test papers for the periodic examinations stored in the faculty center, the fire also destroyed computers and other office equipment, Aran said.

Aran said books and journals in the adjacent library were also destroyed after being doused with water by firefighters.

The fire was confined to the second floor of the four-story building that also houses classrooms, a laboratory and an auditorium.

The blaze reached third alarm before it was put out at 2:41 a.m. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
