Police to secure Erap in San Juan today

The Eastern Police District (EPD) will deploy several officers and other units to secure detained former President Joseph Estrada when he spends New Year with his family in San Juan today.
EPD director Chief Superintendent Luizo Ticman said they monitored no threat against Estrada but just the same they would secure the route he will take from his detention in Tanay, Rizal, to his mothers house in North Greenhills.
"We will be augmenting the security of the former President," said Ticman, stressing that securing the former president is nothing new to them.
Ticman emphasized that the Police Security and Protection Office (PSPO) in Camp Crame will play the lead role in securing Estrada.
The Sandiganbayan granted the wishes of Estrada to spend the New Year with his mother and his family in San Juan.
Estrada is seeking a three-day furlough but the anti-graft court gave him only nine hours as it earlier did when he visited his mother on Christmas Day.
Superintendent Rodelio Jocson, San Juan police chief, said at least two teams of police officers would be deployed to secure the house of Estradas mother while a mobile car each would be posted at three gates leading to the posh North Greenhills subdivision.
"Its the PSPO who would decide where my men would be deployed. I have no knowledge of their security arrangement on the former President," he said.
Jocson said Estrada might travel by land or by helicopter.
Last Christmas Day, Estrada arrived on board a helicopter at the Crisanta Towers helipad along Ortigas Commercial Center. He was then fetched by his son, Sen. Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada, and whisked to the house of Mary Ejercito. Jocson said he was not informed who will fetch the former president this time.
A platoon of crowd disturbance management contingent, equivalent to 25 police officers, will be placed on standby at the EPD headquarters and be ready for deployment in case they are needed, Ticman said.
Estrada is currently on trial on charges of plunder and bribery. He is accused of running an illegal gambling protection racket and pocketing government funding intended for tobacco farmers during his aborted presidency.
He was ousted in January 2001 by a military-backed popular uprising following accusations of massive corruption.
