Guard kills guard in Valenzuela

A security guard, who failed to observe one of the most basic rules in safely handling a firearm, played around with his service shotgun and took the life of a fellow guard last Friday in Valenzuela City.

SPO2 Angeles Miranda identified the erring guard as Mandy Orejas, 24, of the Jack Security Agency and detailed at the CDO Foodsphere Inc. on 560 West Service Road, Paso de Blas, Valenzuela City.

Orejas has been arrested and detained at the police jail pending the filing of appropriate charges.

Report showed the victim and the suspect were engaged in a conversation with fellow guards at around 7:20 a.m. at the security office of the firm they were assigned, when the incident happened.

Orejas allegedly shot dead Dante Monesit, 31, married, of PNR Compound, Caloocan City, as he playfully poked his 12-gauge Armscor shotgun after removing the ammunition from the weapon.

Unknown to Orejas, a round was left in the chamber.

Confident that it was safe to do so, Orejas poked his gun at Monesit.

The gun fired, hitting Monesit in the head and killing him on the spot.

In Makati City, a scavenger was killed after figuring in a heated argument with a security guard yesterday .

Roy Gatela was shot dead by Jonathan Calaminos, a stay-in security guard at the Feron Building in Barangay San Antonio Village at around 6:30 a.m.

Police Officer 2 Jayson David, case investigator, said Gatela was rushed to the Ospital ng Makati, but was pronounced dead by his attending doctor after four hours.

David said Calaminos saw Gatela picking up junk items along Bagtikan street near the Feron Building and asked him to leave the area.

However, the victim answered back, prompted Calaminos to pull out his caliber .38 revolver.

He then shot Gatela in the head.

Appropriate charges is now being readied against the suspect, who is now in the custody of the Makati police. – With Rhodina Villanueva
