Manila mayor receives Gawad Watawat Award

-
A national government promoting respect for and pride in the Philippine flag is one of the worthwhile civic projects recognized during the recent National Flag Day celebration. It’s lead promoter, Mayor Lito Atienza, received the Gawad Watawat Award.

Atienza was also invited by the Flag Day observance committee, led by the Department of Tourism and the National Historical Institute, to deliver an inspirational speech during the awarding rites held at Plaza San Ignacio in the historic Intramuros district in Manila.

The other Gawad Watawat awardees were former President Fidel V. Ramos, Gabby Lopez of ABS-CBN, Henry Sy of the SM Group of Department Stores and the Ayala Foundation, represented by Vicky Garchitorena.

After receiving the award for his role in spearheading the Pilipinas Kong Mahal Movement, which was launched last year during the Bonifacio Day celebration, Atienza said: "In Manila, everyday is Flag Day. Establishments and even private residences have put up flags. Lupang Hinirang is played during opening and closing of official business hours."

Atienza had declared at last year’s 141st birth anniversary celebration of national hero Gat Andres Bonifacio, that the movement was being launched to serve as a build-up for this year’s National Flag Day. It was also envisioned, he said, to instill greater love for the country and boost the Filipinos’ confidence in themselves and their country.

The name of the movement was taken from the patriotic song "Pilipinas Kong Hirang," written by noted Filipino composer Francisco Santiago and contains the phrase "Pilipinas Kong Mahal."
