Caloocan focuses on child protection programs

Caloocan City Mayor Enrico Echiverri said yesterday the city government would like to invest in the future and is putting premium on what is best for the city’s young, including the abused and the exploited.

"From the youth of today will rise the leaders, the shakers and movers of this great city, our beloved Caloocan, our country and the world. It is right that we now invest in their future for whatever their fame and fortune, ours would be, too," the mayor said.

To further strengthen, among others, the protection and welfare of and address the needs of the children in the city, Echiverri has revived the City Council for the Protection of Children (CCPC) which he has chosen to lead.

He said the establishment of the council is mandated by Republic Act 7610, or the Special Protection against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.

Councilors Nora Nubla and Ma. Milagros "Rose" Mercado will assist the mayor as co-chairman and vice chairman, respectively.

Echiverri said that under Executive Order 07-04, the CCPC aims to make and recommend plans, programs and policies for the general well-being of the city’s children.

Among the priority programs that CCPC will initiate is advocacy and active lobbying for legislation that promotes the young’s general well-being.

Echiverri said the CCPC will be actively involved in protecting the youth from undesirable TV programs and publications and encourage and support wholesome ones.

The council will also support children who are victims of abuse and help them attain justice.

Other members of the council include the Liga ng mga Barangay; Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation; City Administrator; Secretary to the Mayor; City Budget Office; Caloocan City police and its women’s and children’s desk; city health office (CHO); treasurer’s office (CTO); civil registry (CRO); city schools superintendent; city planning and development office (CPDO); department of urban, social and industrial relations services (DUSIRS); Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Public Information Office (PIO).
