Relive a lost romance with â€˜Sana Dati’

MANILA, Philippines - Jerrold Tarog’s Sana Dati won Best Film and Best Director at this year’s Cinemalaya, and you can catch this gem of a film in theaters now. Sana Dati stars Lovi Poe and Paulo Avelino, with Lovi as a soon-to-be bride who questions her upcoming marriage when a mysterious man appears to remind her of a lost love. The film is heartbreaking and perfectly captures the poignancy of a lost love resurrected, and it received widespread critical and fan acclaim. Instead of grand gestures, Sana Dati deals with the small moments, the love that we normal people feel and experience every day outside cinema. Go out and see it this weekend.

Discover conceptual photography with Francesca Balaguer

Some people would argue that photography is not art, but when you consider the work of some of the best photographers in the biz, it can change your mind. Case in point, Francesca Balaguer, the Filipina photographer who interned under David LaChapelle. She recently came back to Manila from LA and introduced the wonderful world of conceptual photography to us. The scope of her work is impressive — the concept is out-of-this-world and highly thought-of, and one shot speaks loud volumes. Today, she is holding her second exhibit called “Curious Comfort” and it brings the same intellectual, yet frenetic style of her work. “Curious Comfort” explores the beauty in the trying times, told through Balaguer’s vision. “Curious Comfort” opens today at the Avellana Art Gallery, and will run until Nov. 16.

Attend the Brazilian Film Festival

Our image of Brazil is composed of sun-kissed Victoria’s Secret Angels (or male models, whichever floats your boat) and great rolling beaches. We don’t really imagine Brazil to be the home of great cinema, but the UP Film Institute and the Philippine Embassy of Brazil is hoping to change that with the fifth Brazilian Film Festival. The fest highlights some of the country’s pressing problems: corruption, the judicial system, prostitution, family dynamics, and crime, through seven compelling films. The films featured are Carandiru, Os 12 Trabalhos, Anjos do Sol, A Casa de Alice, Meu Nome não é Johnny, Olga, and O Dia da Caca. The films will be screened at the UPFI Film Center, UP Diliman on September 26 and 27, and October 4 and 11. Admission is free.
