On Mother's Day, a treat that meets your mom's near-impossible standards

She won’t say anything, but your mother is really disappointed with you right now. Two events of this past weekend have reminded her that her aspirations for you have not been fulfilled. That goes for boys as well as girls.

These recent events are the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, and the beatification of Pope John Paul II.

What do these occurrences in another hemisphere have to do with me, you ask. Listen and learn.

Daughters, your mom has always dreamed that you would marry the heir to the throne of England. Yes, when you were little and Mom said someday your prince would come, she was being literal. So the sight of a radiant Kate Middleton floating down the long aisle of Westminster Abbey towards her handsome prince caused your mother dismay — not because the aerial shot revealed advanced male pattern baldness, but because that bride in the Sarah Burton gown should’ve been you. Although your mom would’ve demanded a bit more ornamentation, borloloy (frills) and drama in the gown.

But that doesn’t make any sense, you may protest. Exactly! The relationship between mothers and daughters is emotional rather than logical. To most mothers, their daughters are princesses. They believe their daughters deserve only the best. It doesn’t matter that you have a perfectly charming boyfriend with a brilliant career and a full head of hair — he’s not going to be the King of England.

To compound Mom’s frustration you, her daughter, were supposed to achieve all the things she wanted for herself but could not get because she had to raise you. So it’s a double disappointment. Not to mention an insult to her child-raising skills: Are you suggesting she could not raise a future Queen?

We told you, mother-daughter relationships are complicated.

Which brings us to the sons. As your mother viewed the beatification of Pope John Paul II live from the Vatican, she contemplated her failure as a parent. How could she regard herself a failure when you have grown up into a sensible, well-liked man with a bright future? Because you’re not a saint.

Never mind that she keeps saying she wants you to meet the right girl, settle down and give her grandchildren—deep down she wishes you would renounce mortal pleasures and embrace sainthood. Yes, she actually believes that you are perfect, and that the only thing that stands between you and eternal glory is your attitude. It’s no secret that she thinks no woman is good enough for you, her darling boy. And your beatification, preferably fast-tracked, would be the ironclad testament to her parenting genius. Who else among her friends gave birth to a saint?

Of course we’re exaggerating, but you know what we mean.Your mother is probably your number one fan: she insists that you deserve only the best, and that you’re always selling yourself short. Isn’t the root of most mother-child arguments her refusal to accept that you’re doing all you can to succeed? You can always do more. Like we said, logic doesn’t factor into it.

But there is one occasion when you and your mom can achieve perfect agreement on all issues: A great meal in an excellent restaurant. On Mother’s Day, pay tribute to the first woman in your life with a fabulous dining experience. Then show her that not only have you inherited her fine taste, you also have her knack for finding the best deals.
