MANILA, Philippines - It is no longer a rumor: Rachel Ann Go will play Fantine in Manila come March 2016. She answers a few of our questions, straight from performing at the West End. Seeing our very own Rachel play Fantine, and hearing her sing the impossible I Dreamed a Dream, are only two of the many things we look forward to in Les Misérables’ staging in Manila.
PHILIPPINE STAR: How do you prepare for this role? How do you think life prepared you for this role? How did it all come together?
Rachel Ann Go: First, I did character research and read the Les Miserables novel by Victor Hugo. Also, I think all my life experiences prepared me for the role, the struggle, the challenges, the good times and the blessings. I have gone through a lot of different emotions to be able to act out the role of Fantine.
How do you see Fantine? What does this role mean to you? What will Rachelle Ann Go’s Fantine bring to the table? Whose versions do you wish to emulate?
I was given the chance to perform one of the most iconic female roles in musical theater. After getting the part, I felt so grateful. I bring all my life experiences and emotions to the role. I had great directors to tell me how to perform and guide me through the character and story. So the best version that I bring to the table will be of me.
Do you think that being Filipina/witnessing the same poverty as the one in Les Mis helped you in your role? How? Why?
For sure, being able to witness the unfortunate situations and tragic mishaps that happened to our Filipino countrymen like typhoons and earthquakes certainly helped me to play the role. I can feel the sadness, loneliness and fear of the Filipino people when they face such challenges in our world.
Theater is not as popular as TV in the Philippines. But having you play Fantine in the world stage is definitely a game-changer. Do you see the scene changing soon? How do you hope it will change?
I think musical theater in the Philippines is booming now. I hope to be able to perform in our local musical theater scene. Using the music of our local icons in Manila is the best idea!
Finally, what do you think is the message of Les Mis? Do you think Filipinos should listen to it?
Oh, definitely! I think the greatest message of Les Miserables is that you can always change for the better. We should always strive to be better than what we are. It talks about doing good towards others despite the suffering and pain. It’s about forgiveness, grace, compassion and love.
