MANILA, Philippines - The University of the Philippines College of Music’s Faculty Concert Series presents the “Spring Festival Asian Music Concert†on Feb. 6, Thursday, at the Abelardo Hall, UP Diliman Campus, Quezon City.
The concert will feature the Chinese sizhu (silk and bamboo ensemble), along with other Asian music ensembles such as the Korean samulnori (traditional Korean percussion music), Minyo folk songs (Korean traditional folk music), Indian Improvisation, Indonesian gamelan, and Philippine gong and dance (Southern Mindanao Kulintangan and Binanog of Panay, Bukidnon).
Each ensemble is conducted by competent and credible teachers of each craft and music: the Chinese ensemble led by Vicente Ongsiako, a sought-after Chinese music teacher in the country; both Korean ensembles by Prof. Mi Hyun Oh, a professor in Korean music and PhD student, along with her Samulnori performing group, EuOllim; the Indian ensemble by Joey Valenciano, a professor in World Music and the premier Filipino sitar player in the country, along with Charajit Wasu; the Indonesian gamelan by Lilymae Montano, a professor who was trained by gurus Marissa Casals, Bambang Sunarto and Pak Didut; and the Philippine ensemble’s Maguindanaon Kulintangan by professor and esteemed kulintang master, Aga Mayo Butocan, with Music Education student, Rolinda Gilbaliga for the Binanog of Panay, Bukidnon. The event aims to relate the occasion to Asian traditions and also serves as a celebration of diversity.
