CANDON CITY, Ilocos Sur — For Alyssa Valdez and the rest of Alas Pilipinas women’s team, serving the country without question is the best way to celebrate the country’s Independence Day.

“One thing that we are proud of is to actually represent the country, despite all the things that are happening everywhere and the noise,” said the charismatic Alas captain.

It doesn’t matter that the Filipinas fell short in their bid to advance to the semifinals of the AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup at the Candon Sports Arena here after falling to the Taiwanese Thursday and finishing with seven points on two wins and three defeats in Pool A.

Because these players showed up when the unwilling begged off less than a month after Alas was revamped.

Valdez, who could be on her last tour of duty with the national team, sees a bright future for this current Alas squad.

“We’re looking forward and hope that the young players will continue fighting for the country,” she said.

Just like the way the likes of Valdez did.
