Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu eye Yokohama partnership for wastewater projects

CEBU, Philippines —  The cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu are pursuing separate partnerships with a delegation from Yokohama, Japan, to improve their wastewater treatment and sewerage systems through the possible adoption of Japanese technology and expertise.

In Mandaue City, officials from Yokohama expressed their willingness to assist the city government in developing a proposed wastewater treatment facility during a courtesy visit to Mayor Thadeo Jovito "Jonkie" Ouano.

The Japanese delegation, led by Shimizu Koji, director for Sewage Works Management of Yokohama City, said it is prepared to submit proposals that could help guide the planning and construction of the facility.

The delegation also presented equipment and technologies that could be adopted for the project.

Mayor Ouano welcomed the offer, saying the city government would carefully study the proposals together with the City Council to ensure the project is well planned and properly implemented.

The Yokohama officials also thanked Mandaue City for its longstanding sister-city partnership, which they said has strengthened cooperation on various development initiatives.

Meanwhile, Lapu-Lapu City also explored a similar collaboration with the Yokohama delegation during a meeting with Mayor Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" King-Chan.

Discussions focused on possible cooperation in wastewater treatment and sewerage management as part of the city's environmental protection and urban development agenda.

Koji exchanged ideas with city officials on improving wastewater treatment facilities and sewerage infrastructure while introducing innovative technologies from Toshiba that support sustainable environmental management.

Mayor King-Chan thanked the Japanese delegation for sharing Yokohama's expertise and best practices, saying the proposed collaboration could further strengthen Lapu-Lapu City's environmental protection efforts while supporting its long-term urban development goals. (CEBU NEWS)
