Lakas-CMD backs Marcos amid corruption scandal

MANILA, Philippines — Stalwarts of the Lakas-CMD – the country’s dominant political party – have thrown their “full and unwavering support” behind the administration of President Marcos, who is being battered by allegations of corruption in flood control projects and in the preparation of the national budget.

“Accusations linked to alleged budget insertions and ongoing flood-control investigations must be settled through evidence, not political theater,” the Lakas-CMD said in a manifesto.

Lakas-CMD, which has more than 100 members in the House of Representatives, is headed by former speaker Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez.

“We will never falter. The support of Lakas-CMD for President Marcos is solid in deed and not just in words,” party leaders stressed in Filipino as they blamed “rumor, kuwentong kutsero, in budget, flood-control controversy.”

The party also cautioned concerned authorities against turning investigations into public drama. “Justice is not showbiz, truth is not scripted,” it said. “The nation loses if investigation turns into drama.”

The political party said it is standing on long-held principles that have defined its role in government for decades: respect for the rule of law, due process, as well as fidelity to truth.

“Rumors can never be basis for justice. If an allegation is serious, lay it down in the open through due process and not in the stage of politics,” it said.

“It’s clear right from the start, the President has been following the law – not the dictate of anyone. There is no green light for wrongdoing for PBBM. What’s clear is his order for us to follow the law,” Lakas-CMD said.

Aside from having 109 lawmakers in its fold, Lakas-CMD also counts 15 governors and thousands of local officials across the country as members.

The manifesto was signed by 17 of Lakas’ highest officials, led by executive vice president Rep. David Suarez (Quezon province second district).

“Lakas-CMD stands firm, united and guided by the rule of law. Lakas-CMD: Matatag. Nagkakaisa. Nasa tama,” the party said.
